A story of the friendship between an elderly Jewish man and a young African-American boy set during the Vietnam War.

Set in 1969, Abel Shaddick, a crotchety deli owner, has a grudge against virtually everyone in his upstate New York town of Fairview, particularly against his slacker nephew Stanley who lives behind the shop. Without telling his uncle, Stanley agrees to put up a needy city kid for the summer as part of a charity program run by rich debutante Gloria. Abel immediately vetoes the plan, but it is too late. Boring bank manager Peplow arrives by the early-morning train in the small Yorkshire Dales town of Great Minden on the day of their annual Feast (fair). He chances to meet Herbert Ruskin, who used to be in the same RAF squadron and had lost his legs in a wartime flying accident ten years earlier. A cripple, Ruskin now spends all his days looking out of his window, passing witty but cynical comments on everything the locals do. As the day wears on and the fairground music gets louder, it gradually emerges that Peplow, normally a staid and unemotional man, has come to Great Minden on a macabre mission... involving the use of his service revolver! And it is no coincidence that he has come on the day of the Feast.

Set in Chicago, Samuel "Smooth" Alexander is making a name for himself in the fashion world. But the people he is closest to in his life could bring it all down. Samuel struggles with stalkers, street thugs and the mob to save his friends. But will it kill him in the end?

Several groups of Italians experience amusing adventures and tests of character on the Caribbean island of Antigua. Some of the characters are there simply for rest and relaxation, while others act with different motivations. Multiple plot lines unfold simultaneously as different characters' stories are presented.
